The Dragon's Head Blog: A Homecoming: International Awareness Day 2015 in Canada’s Pacific Region

International Taoist Tai Chi arts Awareness Day 2015 in Vancouver, BC

A team of dedicated volunteers working together to serve the JaiThe Pacific region of Fung Loy Kok brought International Awareness Day home in 2015, inviting participants from throughout British Columbia and beyond, as well as members of the public, to enjoy Taoist Tai Chi arts together, share a traditional jai lunch and learn a bit more about what we do and how we do it.

This year, we invited FLK participants and the public to our home at the Pacific Region Centre in East Vancouver on Saturday Sept. 12. We did Tai Chi sets together while smaller groups demonstrated Lok Hup, Tai Chi Sword and Tai Chi Sabre. At the same time, we demonstrated sitting Tai Chi as practised in our health recovery classes, and we got a great response from members of the public who took part in free Tai Chi classes.

IMG_8770Our all-volunteer kitchen and serving crew produced a tasty and nutritious jai lunch for about 420 people. Volunteer instructors conducted guided tours of our building, explaining everything from why we pay respect to Guan Yin, to the giant Fenway collage we created as part of our fundraising activities for the new International Centre in Dunedin.

We were pleased to welcome so many participants from all over the province as well as our friends from the Portland, Oregon branch. Our yearly Awareness Day event is such a great way for us all to come together to practise.
