The Dragon's Head Blog: Taoist Tai Chi at the United Nations
A small group from the New York City/Tri-State branch had the honor to present Taoist Tai Chi™ arts at the United Nations General Assembly on March 24th for the Lions Club International, a global volunteer organization dedicated to helping the community. Having a long relationship with the UN, the Lions hold an annual international conference in this majestic hall. This year’s theme was “Working Together to Combat Diabetes”. As part of their daylong program they invited us to do a demo, because tai chi is a recommended therapy for this disease. We brought five instructors to demonstrate the first 17 moves, both the standing and chair sets, while one instructor spoke about the society and Mr. Moy. Then a group of ‘Leos’ (younger Lions’ Club members) joined in front of the dais to learn the first three moves. Much of the vast house enthusiastically joined at their seats. Then we introduced a few standing jongs to their delight. We offered two 15-minute mid-day programs to accommodate the nearly 800 in attendance. Between our sessions and after, we spoke with a number of attendees from around the globe eager for more information. We shared their excitement and were proud to represent the society on this international platform.
